Brain Teaser #3

From a Die Hard movie:

You have two water jugs and an unlimited water supply. One jug holds five gallons of water while the other jug hold three gallons of water. The jugs have no markings on them. Using only the jugs, fill the five gallon jug with exactly four gallons of water.

First correct response wins!

No correct answer yet. Keep on trying. It is possible and you can't just kinda guess filling them up...you don't know where 1/5 or 3/5 would be by looking at it.

Answer:

Fill the five gallon jug up. Pour what you can of it into the three gallon jug. Empty the three gallon jug and pour the two gallons from the five gallon jug into the three gallon jug. At this point you have two gallons in the three gallon jug and nothing in the five gallon jug.

Fill the five gallon jug back up and pour what you can into the three gallon jug. You are only able to pour one gallon into the three gallon jug thereby leaving exactly four gallons in the five gallon jug.

Whew! Stay tuned for the next brainteaser.
